Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field has successfully won the Silver Award at the 2025 Environmental Excellence Awards for its achievement in implementing the Gerakan Tolong Menolong Sanitasi Masyarakat Program, also known as the Gentong Mas Santun Program. This initiative has significantly contributed to improving sanitation in coastal communities. The award was presented at The 17th Annual Global CSR & ESG Summit and Awards 2025 on February 26, 2025, in recognition of the company's commitment to sustainability in environmental practices.
During the event, PEP Bunyu Field also presented a paper titled "Gentong Mas Santun, addressing Coastal Community Challenges in Indonesia's Border Regions." The paper highlighted the company's innovative approach to tackling sanitation issues in coastal areas, particularly in Bunyu Barat and Bunyu Selatan Villages, Bunyu District, Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan.
Head of Communication Relations & CID Zona 10, Dharma Saputra, explained that this CSR program has been running since 2020, helping communities that previously practiced open defecation due to limited access to proper sanitation. "The Gentong Mas Santun Program utilizes used plastic drums as floating septic tanks—an innovative solution that is not only environmentally friendly but also easy to implement in coastal areas with challenging geographical conditions," he stated.
Furthermore, according to Dharma, this program aligns with the company's commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), by reducing the spread of diseases caused by poor sanitation. "This program also contributes to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by ensuring better sanitation access for coastal communities and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by reducing marine pollution caused by unmanaged domestic waste," he added.
In a separate statement, the Senior Manager of PEP Bunyu Field, Despredi Akbar, explained that the program has significantly improved water quality around Bunyu Island. "Laboratory test results show that domestic waste processed through the floating septic tanks contains coliform levels far below the established threshold," he revealed.
According to Despredi, this achievement is a testament to the company's commitment to environmental preservation while enhancing the well-being of local communities. "Through this program, the company can create a lasting positive impact," he concluded.
As part of its sustainability commitment, PEP Bunyu Field also collaborates with various stakeholders, including Bunyu Community Health Center (Puskesmas), village governments, and local communities, to ensure continuous education on the importance of healthy sanitation practices.
Winning the Silver Award further strengthens PEP Bunyu Field's position as a company that focuses on energy exploration and production and actively contributes to creating a cleaner and healthier environment for the community.
