Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan – As 2024 draws to a close, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Nunukan Company (PHENC) continues to intensify its activities related to environmental preservation and management on Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan. In mid-December and later this month, PHENC organized a series of events including Environmental Management Socialization, the Reforestation of 1,000 Mangrove Seedlings, a Coastal Clean-Up, as well as the Planting of 500 Terrestrial Tree Seedlings, and Environmental Care Actions.
The Environmental Management Socialization occurred at the Bunyu Barat Village Meeting Hall on December 15. This activity aimed to enhance the community’s understanding of the importance of environmental conservation, particularly in coastal areas vulnerable to beach erosion. The event also served as a platform to provide information on practical ways to manage natural resources sustainably.
Next, the Reforestation of Mangrove Planting, themed "1,000 Seedlings for a Million Generations," was held along the coast of Bunyu Barat Village. This mangrove planting initiative is an essential step in mitigating beach erosion that frequently threatens coastal ecosystems. Mangroves also serve as coastal protectors and habitats for various marine species.
On the same day, the Coastal Clean-Up was conducted at the Fish Landing Place (TPI) Beach in Bunyu Selatan Village. This beach clean-up aimed to maintain the cleanliness of Bunyu Island’s coastline and reduce the detrimental effects of plastic waste polluting the environment.
The following activity was the Reforestation of 500 Terrestrial Tree Seedlings and Environmental Care Actions, which took place in the Eastern Coastal Area of Bunyu Timur Village on December 28. This initiative aimed to enhance the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems, which play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and reducing erosion.
Dony Indrawan, Manager of Communication Relations & CID at PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), explained that these activities are part of PHENC’s commitment to its Community Development Program (PPM) in the environmental sector. "These activities involve local communities and the Bunyu Sub-district Government, who actively participated in the program. This collaboration is crucial to ensure the long-term sustainability and positive impact on the environment of Bunyu Island," he added.
Dony also mentioned that through these activities, PHENC contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 13 on Climate Action, Goal 14 on Life Below Water, and Goal 15 on Life on Land through Tree Planting and Coastal Preservation.
Jaenudin, Acting Head of Bunyu Sub-district, appreciated PHENC’s initiative. "We hope that such activities will continue and have a positive impact on Bunyu Island. This program must be sustained, with consistent monitoring and oversight to ensure that the goal of preserving our coastal and environmental areas is achieved. Thank you to PHENC for carrying out this environmental conservation program," said the Head of Bunyu Sub-district.
PHENC is committed to maintaining environmental sustainability and providing a lasting positive impact on the surrounding community. As a company that supports sustainability, PHENC seeks to continue contributing to the achievement of the SDGs by implementing programs that promote environmental conservation and improve the quality of life for local communities.
