Balikpapan- PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) held a series of events to raise awareness and encourage workers to manage plastic waste with the theme "Solution to Plastic Pollution." The series of events were held from 15 May 2023 to 10 June 2023 while at the same time commemorating Environment Day with various activities such as quizzes, Twibbon creation competitions, to the Green Ideas competition, which is open to all PHM workers both at the Balikpapan office and throughout the PHM fields.

Sr. PHM Drilling and Well Intervention Manager Muhammad Sobirin said the company is committed to reducing and managing plastic waste. "The involvement of PHM workers is really needed so that the company can really provide real solutions to reduce the impact of using plastic on the environment," he said.
The head of the Legal Compliance and Environmental Capacity Building Division of DLH Balikpapan City, Noorlenawati, hopes this activity can become a regular agenda at the company. The participants watched "Plastic Island," a documentary that tells the story of several people's struggles against using single-use plastics, which are harmful to the environment. After watching together, the participants participated in an eco brick-making workshop guided by Ciro Waste. Participants were introduced to making eco-bricks from waste plastic bottles filled with chopped paper and plastic waste. Participants were also invited to participate in an eco brick creation contest to turn into advanced products such as chairs, tables, trash cans, etc.
The highlight of the series of events was the Coastal Clean Up (CCU) or active beach cleaning activity in collaboration with PT Refinery Pertamina Internasional (KPI) RU V Balikpapan on the coast of Monpera Balikpapan (10/06). CCU also involved several adiwiyata schools and waste banks in Balikpapan City and managed to collect 434 kg of waste consisting of 236 kg of organic waste and 198 kg of inorganic waste. Beach clean-up activities were also held along the Le Grandeur Beach line with several Balikpapan City communities and attended by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya, M.Sc.
