Mahakam Training Center Building Receives Green Building Certification

Balikpapan –  The Mahakam Training Center (MTC) Building of PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) was officially awarded the Green Building certificate from EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) on 22 July 2021.

The facility, located at SPS (Senipah Peciko South Mahakam) Field, Samboja Sub-district, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, is a training center for PHM workers and partners. It has several classrooms with   a capacity of 20 people/room. Each room is equipped with essential facilities that promote resources and environmental saving.

General Manager of PHM, Agus Amperianto, explained that the Officers (workers) in SPS Field and the management of PHM are committed to ensure an upstream oil and gas operation that cares about environmental sustainability, as indicated by the Green Building certification for this supporting facility. “MTC Building’s achievement of Green Building certification is a proof of PHM’s commitment and efforts in saving energy and water, as well as in utilizing environmentally friendly materials,” said Agus.

Among the essential facilities in the building, the first is Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) which is a cooling system in the air conditioner that uses pipelines and inverter compressor. VRV is able to improve efficiency and flexibility in air conditioning application which will save energy consumption up to 30%. Using VRV AC allows MTC building to save energy consumption up to 11.8%, while the total energy saving using this system can reach 29%, which satisfies EDGE’s minimum requirement for green building certification of at least 20%.

The second facility is Solar Photovoltaics which serves as a solar power plant. The installation of solar photovoltaics in MTC building substitutes the energy source from fuel-based to renewable energy.

Meanwhile, the Site Manager of SPS Field, Herry Junaedy, said that the installation of Solar Photovoltaics affects water efficiency and energy efficiency that MTC building contributes.  “As a green building, MTC building can promote the decrease in fossil-based gas usage in the amount of 4.79 x 10-6 MMSCF by substituting the energy source that supplies electricity to the building from turbine generator to Solar Panel. This helps the environment by reducing the emission level by 7.45x10-8 Ton Co2 eq,” explained Herry.

The third facility is Water Efficient Urinals  that saves water because it minimizes flushing in each use. Water efficient urinals  installation aims to implement efficient water usage in MTC building, which based on EDGE’s requirement for greenbuilding certification is 20%.

PHM and other subsidiaries of Upstream Regional Kalimantan continue their various efforts to realize safe and environmentally friendly upstream oil and gas operation as a form of company’s commitment in producing energy for Indonesia while sustaining the environment as investment for future generations.
