Instilling Nationalism: Pertamina EP Sangasanga Field Supports the Commemoration of the Merah Putih Incident in Sanga-Sanga, East Kalimantan

Sangasanga – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangasanga Field continues to play an active role in supporting the annual commemoration of the Merah Putih Incident, marking its 78th anniversary this year. Held on January 27 each year, the event honors the courageous struggle of the people of Sanga-Sanga against Dutch colonial oppression—a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s fight for independence.

This year’s commemoration spanned three days, from January 25 to 27, 2025, culminating in a series of events designed to inspire patriotism and strengthen community solidarity. Activities included exhibitions, a ceremonial tribute, a solemn reflection, parades, and a memorial service. Organized by the Sanga-Sanga District government, the event was attended by Kutai Kartanegara Regent Edi Damansyah and Deputy Regent Rendi Solihin, both of whom wore veteran combat uniforms as a tribute to Sanga-Sanga’s legacy as a City of Struggle.

In his speech, Edi Damansyah emphasized the significance of this commemoration as an educational platform for younger generations to uphold the values of unity and perseverance. “We are committed to developing Sanga-Sanga as a Struggle Tourism Destination, in line with its historical identity. With the development of Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), we hope the community and stakeholders will fully embrace this opportunity,” he stated.

The Merah Putih Incident holds deep historical significance, reminding the public of Sanga-Sanga’s pivotal role in defending the Louise-1 oil well from Dutch forces. Today, the site stands as a national heritage landmark, rich in historical and educational value.

According to Sigid Setiawan, Senior Manager of PEP Sangasanga Field, the company’s support for this event reflects its commitment to fostering strong community relations while preserving historical and national values. “We want to ensure that the Spirit of Merah Putih remains alive, serving as a source of inspiration for future generations,” he said.

As part of this year’s commemoration, PEP Sangasanga Field contributed in various ways, including logistical support, facility provisions, and technical assistance. The company also helped organize an exhibition, one of the event’s key highlights.

Beyond honoring Sanga-Sanga’s heroes, the Merah Putih Incident Commemoration serves as a strategic effort to instill patriotism among younger generations. The event brings together students, local leaders, and government representatives, working in unison to preserve and pass down the spirit of national struggle.

“Inspired by this history, we firmly believe that collaboration between companies and communities will help ensure the smooth operation and success of the upstream oil and gas industry—delivering mutual benefits, particularly in securing energy for national development,” Sigid concluded.
