Innovation in Energy Efficiency and Eco-Tourism CSR Program Leads PT Pertamina EP Sangasanga Field to Achieve PROPER Gold from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)

Jakarta – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangasanga Field achieved the prestigious PROPER Gold Award at the Environmental Awards Ceremony for PROPER 2023, held at Bidakara Hotel, Jakarta (20/12). The award was conferred by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, K.H. Ma'ruf Amin, in the presence of Deputy Minister of KLHK Drs. Alue Dohong, M.Sc, Ph.D., and Prof. Sudharto P. Hadi, Mes Ph.D., who serves as the Chairman of the KLHK Proper Advisory Board.

PROPER, or the Program for Rating Company Performance in Environmental Management, is the highest form of recognition from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) for companies operating in Indonesia regarding their environmental management aspects. PEP Sangasanga Field has achieved the highest predicate for 2022-2023 through three Eco Innovations and Social Innovations implemented by the Company.

Andre Wijanarko, Zone 9 General Manager, emphasized that this accomplishment results from the collaborative efforts of numerous stakeholders. He stated, "We collaborated with all stakeholders, particularly the community and government, to execute innovative CSR programs capable of creating shared value that brings benefits and value enjoyed by all."

He explained that the Company implements social and environmental innovations within its CSR programs, creating significant and sustainable impacts on the community.

"In addition to innovation in managing the oil and gas Company's operations safely, reliably, compliantly, and environmentally friendly, we also have a commitment to carry out Social and Environmental Responsibilities that support the development and empowerment of the community in line with achieving sustainable development goals," he added.

Sigid Setiawan, Senior Manager from Sangasanga Field, highlighted that PEP Sangasanga Field implemented three Eco Innovation Programs during the PROPER event. These programs include the No-Workover Mandrel Plug Tool for Production Pipes, the Oil Well Pressure-Temperature Recorder, and the Oil and Water Level Measuring Device for Hazardous Waste Reduction.

"These eco-innovations have a substantial impact on enhancing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and minimizing hazardous waste," he emphasized.

According to Sigid, the No-Workover Mandrel Plug Tool resulted in an energy efficiency of 216 gigajoules (GJ) and savings of Rp1.8 billion. "The Oil Well Pressure-Temperature Recorder contributed to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 24.91 tons CO2eq and savings of Rp2.65 billion. The Oil and Water Level Measuring Device for Hazardous Waste Reduction contributed to a reduction of 0.204 tons of hazardous waste and energy savings of Rp1.62 million," he concluded.

In the realm of social innovation, PEP Sangasanga Field initiated a sustainable tourism program for the conservation of proboscis monkeys and community empowerment named "Sungai Hitam Lestari Eco-tourism" (SHL) in the Kelurahan Kampung Lama area, Samboja District Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan.

Through the SHL program, social issues affecting vulnerable groups—such as impoverished communities, limited job opportunities for women, underemployment among productive-aged individuals, and limited education regarding proboscis monkey ecosystem conservation for children—can be addressed.
