Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan– To commemorate World Environment Day (WED), PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field held a series of activities with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution." This activity involved Company employees, along with students and teachers from SMP Negeri 1 Bunyu, North Kalimantan, as an effort to foster environmental awareness from an early age. World Environment Day is commemorated every June 5.
The series of activities began with an environmental campaign in the Company's work environment and continued with a knowledge transfer program at SMPN 1 Bunyu. Participants were involved in various educational and participatory activities, including the socialization of the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), sorting organic and inorganic waste, practicing composting using the Takakura method, planting trees, and participating in school clean-up actions. The activity was closed with a "waste charity" program, namely collecting waste from homes to be reused into useful products.
Bunyu Field Senior Manager, Despredi Akbar, said that this activity served as a reminder of the importance of each individual's role in waste management, particularly in addressing plastic waste. "Waste management can start from small things, such as sorting waste and implementing the 3R principle. We have also utilized plastic waste in paving blocks as a form of sustainable management that has economic value," said Despredi.
At SMPN 1 Bunyu, PT Pertamina EP Bunyu Field symbolically handed over matoa and rain tree seedlings from the Company's nursery, along with certificates of appreciation to the school. The students then participated in composting practices, waste sorting and socialization, school clean-up activities, and the distribution of tumblers and tote bags to support the school's plastic waste reduction program.
The principal of SMPN 1 Bunyu, Eko Setiawati, welcomed this activity and explained that this program is very much in line with the school's efforts. "We have been carrying out composting and plastic reduction, but through this activity, students and teachers gain additional new insights regarding waste processing methods, as well as real support, such as the distribution of tumblers and tote bags," he said. PT Pertamina EP remains committed to providing benefits to the community through various CSR programs that align with the principles of sustainability, the spirit of #EnergizingYou, and upholding the mandate of Asta Cita to support community independence and Indonesia's energy security. This activity is a real manifestation of the Company's contribution to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
